New UofT Emails. Yes or No?

April 7, 2010

Today I attended a meeting with UofT’s computing services. They brought up the issue that students were very unsatisfied with the email services currently being provided for them (and forced to used). Concerns raised included the issue of not having enough banwidth/having a very small email quota for email storage and also a general lack of applications.

There were a variety of remedies proposed to us by the school, which included two main solutions or a mixture of the two main solutions (does that make sense?). Anyways, the two solutions that were proposed to address this issue were the following:

1) Create a new system from scratch using our school’s resources.

2) Outsourcing the service to a existing email service.
Outsoucing is also a common remedy to this issue in other universities such as University of Alberta, who is converting to Google’s gmail and the University of Washington, who is also converting to Google. Converting to Google also brings in applications such as Google Calender and Google Docs. However, Google is not the only email service we are looking to outsource to.

I am going to list out the concerns that were brought up and I’ll try to address them as well (keep in mind I’m doing this on my studying break so it’s going to be relatively short).
Concerns with Outsourcing:
- Privacy Issues
- Ownership/Rights to Content
- Buyout (if the company we choose to use is going to be bought out)
- Transition to the new service
- Flexibility of the school to customize the service to the UofT population
- Hidden costs

If you want more reading material, here is the link to UofA’s IT website where they address concerns raised by their students about transitioning to gmail:
http://www.vpit.ualberta.ca/email/index.php?ref=faq

So my question for you is:

UTM (or UofT), do you want to move to a outsourced email system or do you want to keep the service internal? Also, what are the concerns (or positive feedback) that you might be having for outsourcing this service?

Leave your comment below! =]

Well, it’s official UTM.

Students United is in the house!

As I sit here writing this post along side the job postings for my associate and some coordinator positions (lesson #1: multi-task if possible), I can’t help but to think back to my first year, which is last year, and how far I’ve actually come. From being a director on the UTMSU board of directors to associate to the president (x2) and now to hiring my own associates. It’s been stressful and at times I want to “push someone’s face into a pie” (to quote @MPG) but it’s definitly been worth it – not for the salary (because my opportunity cost is much higher anyway) but for doing the right thing. I know, cheesy, eh? I’m not sure how else I can word this though to make it sound better. I’m pretty bad with words – which leads to the question  “Why on earth would I choose to express myself in a blog??” LOL

Between planning for the next school year, trying to register in summer school, writing up job postings and looking for a new place, it’s all going by super duper fast. Oh and I forgot about studying for exams and doing BLISS stuff. Those are kind of important too. I need to make sure I’ve got my priorities in place and got my handy dayplanner on me at all time or chaos will strike! Oh and I also have to get a job/get paid ASAP. All this stuff is making me brokee!  Anyways, enough of my blabbering, gotta go back to studying. Two early meetings tomorrow morning (plus summer school registration).

Starstruckk!!

April 1, 2010

Hey Blog Readers!

Today was Starstruck presented by B.L.I.S.S. with performances by my boys, GG Squad, Freedom Funkers (who are All Terrain Funking at UTSC tomorrow btw), RAW (Rise As We) Dance Crew and JReyez amoungst other talented TO artists.

I was fortunate enough to get to MC the event with the hilarious Ryan Butao and despite all of the technical difficulties and the lack of preparation for being MC, we pulled through and raised a nice amount for Breast Cancer Awareness! =]

Here are some photos from the event (all event photo creds goes to Jaiden Chow):

G Smilez and Fluid of GG Squad doing the bellycopter!

UTSC’s Best Dance Crew, Freedom Funkers.

The very clean, very well-coordinated, RAW Dance Crew! =]

JReyez and crew before the show. Check him out on youtube and BlogTV! He was amazing! He performed his hits “She’s Crazy” and “Wedding Dress“, which you can find on his youtube channel.

My co-MC, Ryan, also performed as well. This is him with our techy guy, Michael, who earned some major respect from me cause he was forces to use the lecture hall sound equipment and managed to pull it off with minimual minor quirks. Checkk out Ryan’s song at http://www.facebook.com/ryan.butao?v=app_2392950137#!/video/video.php?v=1221085701420.

BLISS & RAW =]

We learned to do a new super cool handshake! LOL I look super excited to do it!

and of course, last but definately not least, a huge shout out to my ladies of B.L.I.S.S. (especially Alicia, who put alot of time and effort into bringing in these talented performers).

Looking forward to working with everyone again!

Thank you God for small gestures.

March 28, 2010

Yesterday I was at a business plan competition, which I had to leave early for because of an important meeting (relatively far away). I had gone to the competition, presented, had my income statement/balance sheet poked holes into (apparently dragon’s den style – one of the judges was on dragon’s den) and then left to the meeting. I had to take three different types of transits to get to the meeting (as I was in Toronto and the meeting was outside of the GTA). Along my way, while I was travelling on the second type of transportation, I got a call saying the meeting was cancelled but I should go meet with everyone anyway (we were meeting to take the third transit together). I was definity not happy. I wasn’t angry either cause the reason for the meeting being cancelled was not anyone’s fault. However, I was not in a good mood because I missed the other half of my business plan competition for this. =[ When I got there, I was told to just go back to the competition since we weren't sure what we were going to do now. I was still pretty angry at that point because I had to spend another $3 going back downtown (and for a stingy person, $3 is ALOT). God must have noticed I was not happy and been watching out for me because on my way back downtown, a person gave me their Day Pass (which I used for the rest of the day).  Even though it was just a small gesture, it turned my big frown upside down. =]

I just wanted to share this with everyone because sometimes it feels like nothing is going your way – and it’s not anyone’s fault – but it seems like the world is trying to put you down and it’s frustrating but God (or whomever you believe in, mine’s God) is always looking out for you and even if you feel like poo, he’ll find the littlest ways to reach out to you.

Need to start studying for my ECO220 test noww =P

As some people know, I am currently running in the student’s union election. I’m running for the position of VP of University Affairs and Academics on the team Students United. Here is our promo video! =]

Ask me a question!

March 3, 2010

Since half of GG Squad is doing this, I thought I’d conform and play the ‘ask me a question’ thing too!

It’s kind of grody how everyone keeps asking me abou my cousin though!

Ask me something fun!

Happy V Day and Chinese New Year

February 15, 2010

Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! May ya’ll have a successful and prosporous year of the Tiger. RaWR!

This New Year, BLISS did some boothing at Unity Through Diversity to promote Asian Awareness and spread the new year fortune to everyone at UofT. =] We gave out shrimp chips, red packets, wasabi peas, prizes (like the cuddly red stuffed tiger in my hand) and SUSHI!

This is us with Kenny, master sushi chef, who was making sushi on the spot. It was really cool (not to mention yummy)!

Cupid’s Valentines Day Bash with GG Squad

For those of you who knew me in jr. high and high school, you’ll know that I was a major geek (not nerd, cause I wasn’t smart enough). Therefore, this event was the first school dance I have ever attended.

We brought out the banner and had a photobooth in the back. DJ Dee was spinning some sick euro beats (ps. sorry about what i said to you when that girl was crying, dee!), GG dominated on the dance floor and everyone had an amazing time

This is Mark testing out the photo booth. We decided later that this would be an awesome Monster ad.
